Visualization

Visualization imageCrucial to the success of many aspects of the research undertaken at LONI Resource is the ability to visually understand and communicate the results. The Scientific Visualization Core was formed to provide a central resource to help the Resource meet these needs. The Scientific Visualization Core consists of a group of scientists, artists, and programmers who meet the challenge of applying methods to present new and often unique information in an accurate, intuitive and aesthetically pleasing manner. First, our obligations are to facilitate the delivery of resources, technologies and expertise to core scientists and collaborators and those requesting service.

The Scientific Visualization Core produces sophisticated scientific images and animations that illustrate the results of the algorithmic and analytic strategies employed in the core research areas and by our collaborators.

Data Immersive Visualization Environment

A central feature of the laboratory is the Data Immersive Visualization Environment (DIVE). The DIVE is a room, dominated by a 12’ 150-degree floor-to-ceiling curved screen, on which real-time computer graphics, high definition video, or prerecorded demonstrations or slides can be projected. The premise behind this new space is to provide investigators with the unique ability to visually step inside their data and analyze it in new, unexpected, innovative ways utilizing the latest available multimedia technology. The projection system of the DIVE is comprised of a spherical hard-shell screen and three ceiling-mounted 3-chip DLP active stereo capable projectors, each rated at 5000 ANSI Lumens with 1280X1024 SXGA resolution. The projectors support optical blending of 12.5%, digital image warping and CLO, or constant light option, to ensure that image quality is maintained throughout the array. Three of the laboratory’s Reality Monster’s InfiniteReality2 pipes and a high-end BOXX visualization computer can drive these projectors, producing a 3840X1024 immersive display. A sophisticated A/V matrix along with an AMX remote control system facilitates audio and video routing from the DIVE to the conference room or other displays throughout the facility.

Post-Production Suite

LONI has a format-independent post-production suite with a quad processor Macintosh G5 and AJA Kona 3 video capture card. Record and playback equipment includes a Sony DSR 80 digital video deck and a UVW 1800 Betacam SP deck. For audio output, the suite has three 120-watt Crown amplifiers and a JBL surround speaker package. To provide unique content, the laboratory utilizes a variety of professional 3D and motion graphics packages, including Alias’ Maya 3D, Newtek's Lightwave 3D, Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio.
