The LONI Resource is open and collaborative on a regional, national and international level. LONIR encourages an open facility for collaborative research with clear principles of governance and access to both the equipment and the expertise of the faculty by interested neuroscientists.
Our Resource maintains approximately 141 active and productive collaborative projects. Collaborative investigators come from different U.S. institutions and from outside the country. The relationship between these collaborators and the Resource is symbiotic in that efforts to advance their own research have significantly contributed to the research efforts of our group.
Our progress in establishing productive collaborations is evidenced by the numbers of outside groups now working with us. As another metric of our productivity, we have helped investigators collect preliminary results and have directly assisted in the development and successful funding of new grants in 34 collaborations.
The collaborators are divided into three groups; junior, senior and extreme collaborators. Junior collaborators are junior faculty/postdoctoral fellows presently seeking or just receiving extramural support for their research. By helping these investigators develop their research, including computational anatomy and multidimensional modeling, we are improving their chances of receiving extramural funding. Senior collaborators are investigators with whom funded projects are already underway. Extreme collaborators are those investigators who have the closest relationship with the Resource. These collaborations have been highly productive and resulted in considerable advancement in our core research projects.
Investigators desiring access to LONIR compute and/or data resources must complete an application form (see sidebar). Approved collaborators are required to provide information for the annual progress report as required by our funding agency, the NIH National Center for research Resources (NCRR).
